With all the speculation surrounding 2012, there seems to be no end of people, professional or other, that have their own ideas of what the end of the Mayan calendar will mean for the population of the planet. Most theories lean towards earthquakes, tsunamis, polar shifts, solar flares, or a combination of any of these as the possible scenario for what many think will be doomsday.
But if any or all of these scenarios are to occur, what will be the catalyst to cause it? Will it be because on December 21, 2012 we align with the center of the galaxy for the first time in 26,000 years causing gravitational anomalies that will alter our orbit or rotation? Or could it be that the earths' rotation is beginning to slow a little bit and just like a top, it has begun to wobble more than usual, causing more stress on tectonic plates, forcing them to move in ever increasing speed and distance, which in turn results in catastrophic earthquakes that kill hundreds and sometimes thousands of people all over the world?
According to some, we are due to be visited by Planet X, also known to some as Nibiru, the twelfth planet. Forced into a 3600 year orbit, it is due to return to our solar system in 2012, passing somewhere between Mars and Jupiter on its way through. A large number of astronomers and astrophysicists alike agree that due to an unusual wobble in the outer planets, it is probable that there is a large planet, meteor or mass that, although outside our solar system, is still having a gravitational effect on it. Could this mass be the enigmatic Planet X? 2012 could, very possibly, give us the answer.
A planetoid large enough to have a gravitational effect on our solar system from outside of it, would have devastating effects on our planet and the population currently inhabiting it should it enter our system. As it approached it would, no doubt, cause a variety of things to happen such as: The earths wobble would increase, massive flooding and tsunamis in low lying areas of the planet would increase due to earthquake activity, volcanoes that have been dormant for many hundreds of years would suddenly become active, increasing earthquakes, as well as, spewing thousands of tons of smoke and debris into the atmosphere, effectively blocking the suns warming rays. This would temporarily cause a greenhouse effect due to a large increase in carbon dioxide, so temperatures would most likely soar, even in areas very it is very mild for most of the year. This would only be for a short time, however, because should the eruptions continue to pour smoke, ash and debris skyward, the planet would begin to cool and since it no longer would benefit from the heat of the sun, we could be thrown into another ice age.
