Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 172 Issued at 2200Z on 20 Jun 2012

IA.  Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from  19/2100Z
to 20/2100Z:  Solar activity was low.  Region 1504 (S16W77) produced
a C3 flare at 20/1628Z which was the largest event of the period. 
There were no Earth-directed CMEs observed during the period.

IB.  Solar Activity Forecast:  Solar activity is expected to be
predominantly low for the next three days.  There is a slight chance
for an isolated M-class flare from Region 1504 on day 1 (21 June) as
it approaches the west limb.

IIA.  Geophysical Activity Summary 19/2100Z to 20/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was quiet. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux
at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the period.

IIB.  Geophysical Activity Forecast:  Geomagnetic activity is
expected to be quiet on 21-23 June.

May 07 Report of Latest Solar flare and Wind Storm Activity 2012

IA.  Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from  06/2100Z
to 07/2100Z:  Solar activity has been at moderate levels for the past
24 hours. Even though Region 1476 (N10E48) is the largest, 810
Millionths, and most magnetically complex, Fkc/beta-gamma; todays
only M-class event came from the sunspot cluster Region 1470
(S15W57) and Region 1471 (S19W50). This sunspot complex produced an
M1/1n x-ray event at 07/1431Z. Multiple discrete radio frequency
bursts were associated with this event, as well as a 240 sfu
Tenflare and a Type IV radio sweep. These characteristics, as well
as COR2 imagery from the STEREO A spacecraft suggest an Earth
directed CME. Initial analysis suggests only a weak disturbance of
the Earths magnetic field. Earlier in the day around 07/0400Z,
another CME was observed in STEREO A imagery but after analysis, it
was determined to not have an Earth-directed component. Region 1476
continues to grow in size and magnetic complexity as it rotates
further onto the solar disk.

IB.  Solar Activity Forecast:  Solar activity is expected to be at
low to moderate levels for the next three days (08 - 10 May).

IIA.  Geophysical Activity Summary 06/2100Z to 07/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field has been at quiet levels for the past 24 hours.

IIB.  Geophysical Activity Forecast:  The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on day one (08 May) as a
solar sector boundary crossing is expected, as well as possible
effects from a weak CME, observed leaving the solar disk on 05 May.
Quiet to unsettled with a chance for active levels are expected on
day two (09 May), as a coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) moves
into a geoeffective position. Quiet to active levels with a chance
for minor storm levels are expected on day three (10 May) as effect
from the CH HSS continue with the possible arrival of todays CME.

IA.  Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from  24/2100Z
to 25/2100Z:  Solar activity was very low.  Umbral separation was
observed in Region 1422 (N15W78).  Slight decay was observed in the
trailing spots of Region 1424 (N08E52).  The rest of the spot groups
were relatively quiet and stable.  A filament eruption on the SE
limb was observed in SDO/AIA 304 imagery beginning at 24/1911Z.  A
corresponding CME off the SE limb was observed in LASCO C2 imagery
beginning at 24/1948Z.  The CME is not expected to be geoeffective.

IB.  Solar Activity Forecast:  Solar activity is expected to be very
low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (26 -
28 February).

IIA.  Geophysical Activity Summary 24/2100Z to 25/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels.  Isolated
major storm conditions were observed at high latitudes (College)
during the periods ending at 25/1200Z and 25/1500Z.  A greater than
10 MeV proton enhancement began at approximately 25/0330Z and
reached a maximum of 3 pfu at 25/1830Z and continued to be enhanced
by the end of the reporting period.  The event did not reach event
threshold and likely originated from a backside event.

IIB.  Geophysical Activity Forecast:  The geomagnetic field is
expected to be mostly quiet on day 1 (26 February).  Early on day 2
(27 February), unsettled to active conditions are expected with
minor storm periods possible due to the expected arrival of the 24
February CME.  Conditions are expected to calm to quiet to unsettled
levels with active periods possible by day 3 (28 February).

Latest Forecast of Solar Storms, Flare Activity

IA.  Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from  22/2100Z
to 23/2100Z:  Solar activity was very low.  Region 1422 (N15W52)
showed decay in its trailing spots.  A new region appeared on the NE
limb and was numbered Region 1423 (N18E70).  Two CMEs were observed
overnight; the first off the North limb, observed in LASCO C2
imagery beginning at approximately 23/0148Z and the second beginning
at 23/0824Z off the NW limb.  The second CME was associated with a
filament eruption on the NW limb first seen in SDO/AIA 193 imagery
at 23/0746Z.  None of the CMEs are expected to be geoeffective.

IB.  Solar Activity Forecast:  Solar activity is expected to be at
very low levels with a chance for a C-class activity.

IIA.  Geophysical Activity Summary 22/2100Z to 23/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was quiet.  Solar wind speed at the ACE
spacecraft decreased from approximately 530 km/s to 440 km/s while
the Bz component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field did not vary
much beyond +/- 4 nT.

IIB.  Geophysical Activity Forecast:  The geomagnetic field is
expected to continue at mostly quiet conditions for the forecast
period (24 - 26 February).

Report of Solar Flare Activity



Solar activity has been low with only minor C-Class flares detected within the past 24 hours. Sunspot 1422 remains a large group and may produce further C-Class flares. Sunspot 1421 in the northeast quadrant, is starting to show signs of sunspot growth.
