Latest Report of Solar Flare Activity Feb 2012

Updated Feb 20 2200 UTC

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 051 Issued at 2200Z on 20 Feb 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 19/2100Z
to 20/2100Z: Solar activity was low. There were three C-class flares
during the past 24 hours. The largest of these was a C4/Sf at 0509Z
from Region 1421 (N18E32). Region 1422 (N16W11) produced the other
two C-flares and is currently the largest group on the disk.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low.

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 19/2100Z to 20/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was unsettled to active with some isolated
storm periods at high latitudes. Solar wind data from ACE indicated
the influence of a high speed stream from a coronal hole. The
greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached
high levels during the period.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be unsettled with a chance for active periods on the
first day (21 Feb) due to continued effects from the high speed
stream. A decrease to mostly quiet levels is predicted for the
second day (22 Feb) and quiet levels are expected to continue for
the third day (23 Feb).

Report of Solar Flare, Storms and Geophysical Activity Latest news

Updated Feb 19 2200 UTC

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 050 Issued at 2200Z on 19 Feb 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 18/2100Z
to 19/2100Z: Solar activity was at low levels. New Region 1422
(N15E02) produced a C1/Sf flare at 19/0851Z. This region developed
rapidly on the disk as a 10 spot D-type group. The remainder of the
disk and limb was quiet and stable with no Earth-directed CMEs
detected.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low
with a slight chance for M-class activity for the next three days
(20 - 22 February), particularly from developing Region 1422.

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 18/2100Z to 19/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels through about
19/0200Z. For the following 6 - 9 hours, active to minor storm
conditions were prevalent. This increase in activity was due to
effects from a geoeffective coronal hole high speed stream. The
period ended with predominately quiet conditions with isolated high
latitude active intervals. During the period, ACE solar wind
velocities steadily increased from about 325 km/s, reaching a peak
of about 500 km/s at 19/0700Z. Through the remainder of the period,
wind speeds gradually decreased to 400 km/s. At 19/0220Z, the Bz
component of the interplanetary magnetic field reached a maximum
southward extent of -14 nT while Bt reached a maximum of 16 nT.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at predominately quiet levels for the next three days
(20 - 22 February).

Latest news Report of Solar Flare, Storms and Geophysical Activity

Updated Feb 18 2200 UTC

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 049 Issued at 2200Z on 18 Feb 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 17/2100Z
to 18/2100Z: Solar activity was at very low levels. New Region 1421
(N17E59) rotated onto the disk as a simple unipolar group. The
remainder of the disk and limb was quiet and stable. No
Earth-directed CMEs were detected.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very
low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (19 -
21 February).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 17/2100Z to 18/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels. ACE solar wind velocities
were steady at 300 km/s through about 18/1500Z while the Bz
component of the interplanetary magnetic field remained mostly
north. After 1500Z, wind speed, temperature and density all
indicated gradual increases, while Bz indicated some rotation
through +/- 7 nT. These signatures were indicative of a co-rotating
interaction region in advance of a coronal hole high speed stream
(CH HSS).

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels, with isolated active
periods, on day one (19 February) due to recurrent CH HSS effects.
By days two and three (20 - 21 February), a return to mostly quiet
levels is expected.

Latest Report of solar flare activity 2012

Updated Feb 17 2200 UTC

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 048 Issued at 2200Z on 17 Feb 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 16/2100Z
to 17/2100Z: Solar activity was at very low levels. Region 1418
(S23W55) redeveloped spots as a B-type group. The remaining regions
were quiet and stable. Two filament eruptions were observed during
the period. The first eruption was a 9 degree long filament
centered near N26E41 that lifted off at about 17/0130Z. The second
eruption was a 16 degree long filament centered near S33W17 that
lifted off at about 17/0553Z. LASCO C2 imagery observed a very
faint, slow-moving CME off the SSE limb first visible about
17/0745Z. This CME does not appear to have an Earth-directed
component.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very
low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (18 -
20 February).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 16/2100Z to 17/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels. ACE solar wind velocities
decreased during the period from about 350 km/s to near 300 km/s
while the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field did not
vary much beyond +/- 4 nT.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at mostly quiet levels through most of day one (18
February). By late on day one and through day two (19 February),
field activity is expected to increase to quiet to unsettled levels,
with isolated active periods, due to recurrent coronal hole high
speed stream effects. A return to mostly quiet conditions is
expected by day three (20 February).

Report of solar flare activity 2012

Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity 16 Feb 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 15/2100Z
to 16/2100Z: Solar activity was at very low levels. The disk and
limb were quiet and stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed
during the period.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very
low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (17 -
19 February).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 15/2100Z to 16/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels. ACE solar wind
velocities varied between 350 to 400 km/s while the Bz component of
the interplanetary magnetic field was mostly northward to +5 nT.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at mostly quiet levels on day one (17 February)
through late on day two (18 February). Late on day two and through
day three (19 February), field activity is expected to increase to
quiet to unsettled levels, with isolated active levels, due to
recurrent coronal hole high speed stream effects.
